George Mason University has partnered with the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) in India to create an accelerated bachelor’s/master’s (BAM) or “3+1+1” pathway program. Participating students will earn a bachelor’s degree through Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology and a master’s degree from George Mason in five years, rather than the standard six.

Students will study and fulfill the program requirements in both countries, completing the first three years of their undergraduate degree at TIET, then transferring to George Mason to finish their final year of undergraduate studies, followed by a year of graduate studies. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive the following degrees:

Application
TIET will recruit students separately for this program and those students will apply as transfer undergraduate degree-seeking students to Mason in their third year. Students are required to submit official transcripts and proof of English language proficiency.
Students accepted to the program will be admitted to George Mason initially as undergraduate degree-seeking students. Upon conferral of the TIET bachelor’s degree and admission into the George Mason graduate program, students will be considered for graduate degree-seeking status.

Admission
Upon notification of undergraduate admission to George Mason, students are required to submit an online Accelerated Master’s (BAM) application for the specific master’s program being pursued. Students must submit an unofficial TIET transcript to indicate the minimum number of credits has been completed in order to be officially accepted to the Accelerated Master’s program.
Acceptance

Students will be notified in writing of undergraduate admission to George Mason. George Mason will send program application decisions, which are contingent on students’ final spring or fall grades at TIET, for admission into the fall or spring semester of the term in which they hope to enroll.

Notification of acceptance to the Accelerated Master’s program will be in writing and is contingent on successful submission of the Accelerated Master’s application and materials.

Undergraduate policies apply to the student while in undergraduate degree status. Once matriculated to the master’s program, students are subject to all graduate academic policies.

Students are responsible for requesting their transcripts from each university and providing them to the other university as required. George Mason cannot request student transcripts directly from TIET, nor can it provide them without a student request.

Enrollment beyond the first semester in the graduate program at George Mason requires official transcripts showing bachelor degree conferral from TIET. International students have additional requirements that must be met. Information regarding those requirements can be found here.
Tuition and Fees
During the student’s study at George Mason, at both the undergraduate and graduate level, students will pay tuition and fees directly to George Mason. Students are assessed the undergraduate tuition rate while in undergraduate status and the graduate tuition rate while in graduate status.

Financial Aid
Students at George Mason are eligible to receive financial assistance, provided by George Mason, for both the undergraduate and graduate year. International students are not eligible for federal financial aid. Students in this program are provided a special partner rate that reduces the out-of-state tuition.
George Mason University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
FAQs
Where can I find more information about immigration and visas?
Students will be solely responsible for obtaining any required visas in compliance with all immigration laws and regulations of the United States and will be subject to the laws of the United States as well as the policies and practices of George Mason with respect to sponsorship of, and support for, international visitors. Students are responsible for meeting deadlines and complying with regulations and policies, and George Mason will provide information and assistance where possible. Does George Mason provide housing for students in the 3+1+1 pathway program?
Undergraduate students at George Mason are eligible to receive on-campus housing in accordance with George Mason Housing and Residence Life policies. Students must apply through the online application to secure housing, as specific residency requests are competitive. Students are not required to live on campus and may elect to live off campus in a non-George Mason property. Students that live on-campus are responsible for paying for all housing charges, deposits, late fees, damage fees and any other housing costs. Students are responsible for following all rules and regulations in the housing contract.
Graduate students are responsible for securing their own housing. George Mason will provide information and assistance where possible. Visit the Contemporary Student Services website for off-campus housing resources.
Does George Mason provide students with health insurance?
Program students are required to be covered by the George Mason student health insurance policy through the duration of their time at George Mason. Students will automatically be registered and billed for this insurance unless they provide proof of a comparable policy through the health insurance waiver process, which must be submitted before September 15th. Additional health insurance information can be found on the Student Health Services website.
Do students enrolled in the program have access to university benefits and services?
Students enrolled in the program receive the same benefits and services as other full-time enrolled students at George Mason and will be eligible for up to 36 months of OPT after graduation.
