Many of our students are first-generation and often work full-time while they earn degrees. Some are married with families; others are veterans who have finished a tour of duty and are now returning to finish a degree or earn an advanced degree.
Scholarships make the difference to those juggling multiple financial responsibilities, and can also be an incentive for an outstanding high school student to choose Mason over another university. Need and merit-based scholarships are available to Mason students.
Scholarships are divided into the following types:
- Distinguished scholarships: $75,000 or more, which are supported by private individuals as well as corporations. This type of scholarship enables the school to recruit an academically gifted high school student and/or merit scholar and cover the cost of their tuition as well as their room and board for four years.
- Endowed scholarships: Donations of $50,000 or more create a permanent fund, invested for growth and income whose purpose is to provide a perpetual source of income. Endowed scholarships can be funded from a one-time payment in full, or arrangements can be made to make payments over a period of time, i.e. five years with an initial gift of $5,000, with the understanding that it will not become a named endowment, and awarded to a student until the balance reaches $50,000. Endowments may be named in recognition of the benefactor establishing the endowment, and while it is preferred that scholarships be unrestricted, occasionally it can be appropriate to specify that the scholarship be awarded to students from a specific academic focus or group. The donor may not, however, actually name an individual student to receive the award. A scholarship committee identifies appropriate recipients.
- Non-Endowed scholarships: A fund is established, but depends on donations for its funding.
- Annual scholarships: Donations of $1,000 or more come from companies, organizations, and individuals who choose to give annually to support scholarships.

CEC Scholarships
Bersoff Undergraduate Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarships to academically gifted high school students who enter the CEC. The recipient will be ranked in the upper 5% of the CEC applicant pool, enter Mason with approximately a full semester of college credits, be a National Merit Scholar or will have demonstrated equivalent skills by reference letter, demonstrate strong leadership skills, and good citizenship, have participated in and won technical competitions, and have the ability to think out-of-the-box. No other criteria are listed.
Charles C. Joyce Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarship support for undergraduate students in any program in the CEC. Recipients may be in-state or out-of-state residents and may be enrolled full-time or part-time. Recipients will qualify on the basis of academic merit. This scholarship is renewable.
Deltek Endowed Scholars
To support students pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in software engineering and is not limited to scholarships. To include scholarships, networking, and community building assistance through attendance at conferences; sponsorship of capstone programs, and access to Mason's Student Success Center. Up to $5,000 may be expended for a capstone sponsorship per academic year. Spending of non-scholarship funds is to be determined by the Chair of the Dept. of Computer Science.
The Dr. Lawrence Cranberg Endowed Scholarship in Science and Engineering
To provide scholarship support for students in the CEC. Recipients may be in-state or out-of-state. This scholarship is renewable. No other criteria are listed.
Durant Family Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarship support for undergraduate students or students in the accelerated master's program enrolled in the CEC who are majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering. Scholarship recipients must be full-time, in-state students who will qualify on the basis of financial need and must be under-represented in the program. Scholarship recipients will be selected by a committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Engineering and Computing in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid. This scholarship is renewable.
E. Bernard White, PhD Memorial Fund Scholarship
To provide two $1,000 scholarships per academic year for undergraduate students majoring in engineering. Preference for one male and one female African American student. The recipient may be either full or part-time, in-state or out-of-state, and must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Recipients will qualify on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
Ed Hetsko & Laurie McQuillan/ISSA-NOVA Scholarship Endowment
To provide scholarships for full-time graduate students pursuing a degree in the CEC, with a preference for a student with an interest in information assurance. Preference is also given to in-state students. The recipient will qualify on the basis of academic merit and financial need and they must be a citizen of the U.S. or Resident Alien.
The Edward Ciulis and Ethel J. Ciulis Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarship support to undergraduate students within the CEC who have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better in high school and maintained a minimum of 2.5 at George Mason University and have demonstrated financial need. The recipient must be a US citizen. No other criteria are listed.
FreBon International Corporation Endowed Scholarship
To benefit undergraduate students in technology. The recipient must be a full-time, in-state student majoring in technology with a minimum GPA of 3.3 in 4 years of math and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 while attending GMU. This scholarship is renewable.
Harbitter Family Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarship support to full-time undergraduate students with an information technology or engineering major. The recipient will qualify based on merit and need with a strong emphasis on need. The recipient will be a U.S. Citizen with a preference for Northern Virginia residents. This scholarship is renewable.
H. Randall and Anna W. Edwards Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarships for undergraduate students pursuing a degree within the CEC. The recipient will qualify on the basis of academic merit and financial need. The recipient may be full-time or part-time and may be in-state or out-of-state. This scholarship is renewable.
James D. Palmer, PhD Endowed Scholarship
To support scholarships for full-time or part-time students enrolled in the Volgenau School of Engineering. Recipients will qualify based on merit. The recipient must be an undergraduate student until such time as sufficient endowment funds ($100,000) are raised to fund a graduate student. This scholarship is renewable. No other criteria are listed.
Jean Wu Distinguished Undergraduate Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarships for entering freshmen pursuing a degree in the CEC. The recipient will be ranked in the top 5% of the VSE applicant pool, enter Mason with approximately a full semester of college credits, be a National Merit Scholar or will have demonstrated equivalent skills by reference letter, demonstrate strong leadership skills, and good citizenship, have won 1 technical competition, and have the ability to think out-of-the-box. This scholarship is renewable.
John L. Howard Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarships for undergraduate students pursuing a degree within the CEC. Recipients will qualify on the basis of academic merit and financial need. The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA, be a full or part-time student, and may be either an in-state or out-of-state student. This scholarship is renewable.
Kelsie R. Troutman Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarships to women pursuing degrees in engineering. Recipients will qualify on the basis of financial need, must be full-time undergraduates, and may be either in-state, out-of-state, or international students. This scholarship is renewable.
Lloyd J. Griffiths Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarships for undergraduate students in the school of engineering. The recipient may be a full-time or part-time student in or out of state. This scholarship is renewable.
Mark H. Houck Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarship support for students in the Sid and Reva Dewberry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Recipients may be undergraduate or graduate students, in-state or out-of-state residents, and may be enrolled full-time or part-time. Recipients will qualify on the basis of academic merit and will be selected by a committee appointed by the Dean of CEC in coordination with SFA. This scholarship is renewable.
Northern Virginia Technology Council - Daniel R. Bannister Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarships for full-time undergraduate juniors and seniors in the CEC. The recipient will qualify on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to a Northern Virginia resident. This scholarship is renewable.
Patton Harris Rust and Associates Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarships for undergraduate students in the Urban Systems Engineering program. The recipient must be a resident of Virginia, Washington, D.C. or Montgomery, Prince George's, Charles, Frederick, Anne Arundel, or Howard Counties in Maryland, and must have at least a 2.5 (based on a 4.0 scale) overall high school grade point average and be selected into the Undergraduate Urban Systems Engineering program.
Society of Satellite Professionals International Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter Scholarship
To provide scholarships for undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in courses focused on satellite, aerospace or allied tech.
Software Engineering Scholarship Fund
To provide scholarship support to students studying software engineering.
SRA Jeffrey B. Westerhoff Endowed Scholars Program
To provide scholarships for undergraduate students pursuing a degree within the CEC. Recipients will qualify on the basis of academic merit and may be either in-state or out-of-state students. This scholarship is renewable.
Sushil Jajodia Distinguished Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarships for high-achieving CEC undergraduates. Recipients will be ranked in the top 5% of the applicant pool, and have entered George Mason University with approximately a full semester of credits from AP, IB, DE, etc. courses, be a National Merit Scholar, or have demonstrated equivalent intellectual maturity, should have strong leadership skills and have participated in and won technical competitions at the state and national levels. This scholarship is renewable.
Trudi A. McKimens Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarship support for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in the CEC. No other criteria are listed.
The College of Engineering and Computing Alumni Development Board Scholarship
To provide support for undergraduate scholarships in the CEC. Recipients will qualify on the basis of academic merit and must be full-time students, but may be either in-state or out-of-state. This scholarship is renewable.
WGL Engineering Scholarship
To provide scholarship support for transfer students completing their Bachelor of Science in engineering degrees through the COMPACT dual admissions program after having completed an Associate of Science in engineering at NVCC. Recipients may be full-time or part-time, in-state or out-of-state, and will qualify on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Preference will be given to students from under-represented populations. This scholarship is renewable.

Cyber Security Engineering
Abile Group, Inc. Scholarship
To provide support for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in cybersecurity. Recipients may be full-time or part-time, in-state or out-of-state, and will qualify on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Preference is given to students from the Washington DC area.
The Anshul Chimaladinne Memorial Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarship support for undergraduate students majoring in Cybersecurity Engineering. Recipients must be full-time, in-state students and will qualify on the basis of greatest financial need.
Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering
Armed Forces Communication Electronics Association (AFCEA) Scholarship
The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for undergraduate students studying in the field of electronics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, scholastic achievement/capability, and be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
Civil Infrastructure Engineering Institute Endowed Scholarship
The recipient will be chosen based on scholarly engineering potential, including past scholastic accomplishments, community service, and other factors that represent candidates as well-rounded students. Financial needs will be considered but will not necessarily be the major factor in choosing recipients. The minimum GPA eligibility is 2.7.
Michael J. Casey Endowed Scholarship
Applicant must be an undergraduate majoring in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering. Applicants must be full-time students and may be either in-state or out-of-state, and will qualify on academic merit.
Michael S. Bronzini CEIE Endowed Scholarship
Applicant must be an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in the Sid and Reva Dewberry Department of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering. The applicant will qualify based on merit and financial need and will be either a full-time or part-time student and may be in-state or out-of-state.
Systems Engineering and Operations Research
Andrew P. Sage Endowed Scholarship
The applicant must be a graduate student pursuing a degree in Systems Engineering and have a demonstrated financial need. The applicant can be a full-time or part-time student and may be in-state or out-of-state.
The Carl M. Harris Memorial Scholarship
Applicant must be a full-time graduate student pursuing an M.S. degree in Operations Research and must qualify on the basis of both academic merit and financial need. The recipient may be an in-state or out-of-state student.
Dr. H. Gilbert Miller/Noblis Endowed Scholarship
Applicant must be a graduate student pursuing a master's or Ph.D. in data analytics or systems engineering. Applicant must be in-state and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The applicant can be part-time or full-time and will qualify based on academic merit and financial need.
Information Sciences and Technology
PEC Solutions Scholarship
To provide scholarships to undergraduates majoring in Information Technology or Engineering. The recipient must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors, and students who reside in the Washington metro area.
Peter J. Farrell Endowed Scholarship
To provide scholarship support for undergraduate students pursuing a degree in the Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST). Recipients may be enrolled full-time or part-time, may be in-state or out-of-state students, and will qualify on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
Steven M. Schorling, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship
Applicant must be a full-time freshman, sophomore, or junior in Information Technology and will qualify based on academic merit and contribution to the department or school. The applicant must maintain a 3.0 GPA and is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

IMC Suneeth Nayak Endowed Scholarship
Applicant must be a graduate student with a minimum GPA of 3.2 at the time of application and must be seeking a degree in Information Technology, Engineering, or Computer Science.
Katona Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Bioengineering
Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Bioengineering, will qualify based on academic merit and financial need, and must maintain a 3.0 GPA. The applicant may be either in-state or out-of-state, and non-U.S. citizens are eligible.
Oscar Barton Scholarship
To provide scholarship support for undergraduate students who are pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering and who are from underrepresented groups in the student population. Recipients may be full-time or part-time, may be in-state or out-of-state students, will qualify on the basis of financial need, and will be selected by a committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Engineering and Computing in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Aid. This annual scholarship is renewable.
The Washington Apple Pi Endowed Scholarship
The applicant must be a student pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science at the College of Engineering and Computing. Recipients will qualify on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Students may be in-state or out-of-state or international and students may be part-time or full-time.
W. Murray Black Endowed Scholarship
The applicant will be an undergraduate pursuing a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and will qualify on the basis of both academic merit and financial need. The applicant may be a full-time or part-time and either an in-state or an out-of-state student.
