Information sciences and technology doctoral students Sajad Kargar, Ashish Hingle, and Julia Hsin-ping Hsu won first, second, and third place awards at George Mason University’s College of Engineering and Computing Innovation Week 2024 graduate poster contest in February.

IST’s Myeong Lee received a  $150,000 grant from the Virginia Board of People with Disabilities for the Mapping Information Ecology project. “We want to provide information systems strategies, [structural] recommendations, and related policy recommendations to the state. That's our goal," said Lee.  

On March 21, 2024, Break Through Tech Mason hosted "A Day in the Life: Tech Jobs Unveiled," a panel event featuring Jamie Bowers, Site Reliability Engineer at Microsoft; Veeraj Modi, Security Analyst at Microsoft; and Cassandra Rothrauff, Senior Computer Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton. Each panelist discussed their path in the tech industry as well as advice they would offer students just starting out.

At "Strategies for Success in Navigating Male-Dominated Industries,” hosted by Break Through Tech Mason, students heard from a panel of four women working throughout the tech industry. 

The College of Engineering and Computing at George Mason University introduces four innovative graduate certificate programs in fall 2024, catering to burgeoning fields of mechanical engineering, computer science, systems engineering and operations research, and electrical and computer engineering. Professors leading each program provide insights into the curricula design, societal impact, and ideal candidates.

The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative Northern Virginia Node (CCI NoVa Node) is preparing for the third iteration of its Cybersecurity Traineeship Program, which offers a seven-week course to Virginia residents interested in pivoting into the cybersecurity sector followed by career support from George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College professionals.

Mason researcher Vijay Shah has joined a $2 million project to develop a system to secure 5G Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) architecture, a collaboration between Mason and Virginia Tech, Penn State University, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

A Mason team including a high school student, a postdoctoral scholar, and a mechanical engineering professor has developed a way to use spent coffee grounds to remove diverse contaminants from water.
