In two recent research projects, George Mason statistics professor Abolfazl Safikhani has applied machine learning tools to time series analysis of land use and real estate pricing to help decision-makers in urban planning and real estate.  

A postdoc program for health researchers interested in statistics and data science, run jointly by George Mason’s statistics and global and community health departments, with mentors from Mason and Inova Health, has developed from the ongoing partnership between Inova Health and George Mason’s Statistics Collaboration Core. Mohamad Bahij Moumneh, MD, and Jason F. Goldberg, MD, are the program’s standing inaugural members.

At the 2023 Joint Statistics Meeting, one of the largest statistics events in the world, George Mason’s statistics department teamed up with Georgetown’s data science department and George Washington’s statistics department to co-host the first Georges Reception. Students, alumni, faculty, and friends gathered to network with fellow DC area locals.

The George Mason University Department of Statistics celebrated 30 years of teaching, research, and collaboration in March with the Conference on Evolving Statistical Data Science. Attendees came together for two days of exciting panel talks and networking.

The George Mason University Department of Statistics  welcomed eight new faculty members in 2020 – 2021, who are internationally recognized experts.

George Mason University’s outstanding location, available opportunities, and growing reputation combined to produce a winning formula that attracted statistics professor Lily Wang to the College of Engineering and Computing Department of Statistics in fall 2021.

The American Statistical Association (ASA) Census Quality Indicators Taskforce selected assistant professor of statistics Jonathan Auerbach to independently review the 2020 census as part of a three-person research team. Ironically the major finding was what they didn't find -- evidence of malfeasance or wrongdoing.

Not many degrees are as versatile and marketable as a degree in statistics. Recent graduate, Tae Song (MS STAT '21) shares his insights and successes.
