Biography

Shivam Chaturvedi joined George Mason University as an assistant professor in August 2025. Before this, he was a research investigator and adjunct lecturer at the University of Michigan from 2022 to 2025. He also held a postdoctoral research position from 2021 to 2022. During this tenure, he has executed different projects funded by NSF, ARPA-e, DoE etc. and various industrial partners. His research interests lie in the analysis, design, and control of power converters, with applications in microgrids, power factor correction, electric vehicle battery charging, and automation systems. Before his postdoctoral work, he served as a research associate at the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur, where he developed and implemented nonlinear control strategies for direct torque control of induction motors, particularly for electric vehicle applications. During his PhD, he focused on distributed control of DC-DC and DC-AC microgrids. His work involved implementing both primary and secondary control strategies for microgrids which consist of various converter topologies—including buck, boost, bi-directional and DC-AC networks—to enhance system reliability, enable proportional load sharing and mitigate the second order harmonics. He has hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop simulation platforms such as OPAL-RT, dSPACE, TI F28335 and power converter designing.

His work has been published in leading journals, including IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, and conferences like IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC), International Conference on Industrial Electronics (IECON), IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, ECCE and  IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meetings.
