Computer Science to Benefit from Washington Apple Pi Scholarship

The Volgenau School of Engineering received a gift from Washington Apple Pi to create an endowed fund to provide scholarship support for undergraduates and graduate students studying computer science.

Larry and Nicole Kerschberg were instrumental in establishing the endowed scholarship to support computer science students.  Kerschberg, a computer science faculty member and board member of Washington Apple Pi, credits his wife Nicole with suggesting the idea to him.

“Prof. Kerschberg is well-known in the CS department as a huge fan and advocate of Apple computers and devices, said Sanjeev Setia, the department’s chair. “At any given moment, he (Kerschberg) has at least two Apple devices on his person!”

Washington Apple Pi (“the Pi”) is a community of Apple iPad, iPhone and Mac users; people with a common aim to improve knowledge and enjoyment of Macintosh computers and Apple mobile devices.

President Ken Goldman noted, “[O]ur Pi philosophy has always been one of “users helping users.”  We are delighted to extend this philosophy forward for years to come by devoting some of our financial resources to help students of George Mason University."

“We really appreciate Washington Apple Pi for making the connection between the education of Computer Science students and the success of companies like Apple in developing world-changing devices,” said Setia.

The first student will receive the award in fall 2016.
