The engineering programs at George Mason jumped ahead in the 2023 U.S. News & World Report Best Online Programs rankings. The online master of science degree program in systems engineering is ranked number one among public universities in the state of Virginia for industrial engineering.

The ranking contributes to Mason’s role in educating Virginia’s workforce, as many students within the program reside within the state.

“Systems engineering programs are generally selective and over the past few years we have focused on refining a number of aspects of our master of science program here at George Mason,” says Daniel Garrison, director of online and strategic initiatives in the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC). “We have raised the bar by attracting accomplished faculty and have seen the quality of students also increase.”

The systems engineering graduate program allows students to study virtually, but still visit the campus any time they want to connect with faculty and peers. This unique blend gives students the best of both worlds and the flexibility to navigate around any kind of schedule.

“This approach gives students greater flexibility to study on their terms and schedules,” says Garrison. “One nice benefit is that some classes are a mix of in person and online students, so virtual students have a chance to network with others more easily.”

Systems engineering graduate students often go on to careers in industrial engineering, systems analysis, digital engineering, and systems design. CEC graduates are often sought for roles within major tech companies including Amazon, Lockheed Martin, Mitre, and Boeing.

“We are excited to see the standing of the systems engineering program advance, as evidenced by its most recent industrial engineering ranking,” says Garrison. “We continually work with our programs to facilitate and ensure both academic and career success for students. We believe this ranking communicates to prospective students that pursuing an engineering education at Mason is rewarding and can open doors.”

Mason’s graduate online engineering programs as a whole are ranked 44th nationally, and are seen as some of the best in the nation.

U.S. News provides more than 100 different types of numerical rankings and lists to help students narrow their college search.

Strategic thinking and increased research led to a major leap forward in the College of Engineering and Computing’s Department of Statistics ranking. Since U.S. News and World Report last measured, the statistics department rose from 82 to 54 in the rankings.

When Jiayang Sun arrived as the new chair in 2019, she came with a plan to hire more faculty and increase research. Since 2020 the department has set new records in research expenditures, hiring seven new faculty members in the fall of 2020-fall 2021 and welcoming other faculty including those on sabbatical leave. Sun says, “The new faculty brought with them outstanding strengths in statistics and data science.”

“We are very pleased and excited by the significant jump in the rankings by our Department of Statistics and congratulate the entire department and its leadership for their success,” says Ken Ball, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. “Over the past several years, the College of Engineering and Computing has made a considerable investment in our statistics programs, including over $1.5 million for new faculty start-up funds and graduate research assistants.”

The department also strengthened its four-year-old partnership with Inova Health which has provided tenure-track and term faculty opportunities for collaborative research. Assistant Professor David Kepplinger, a new hire, is involved with the partnership. He says, “The research culture at Mason and the statistics department is built around the idea of collaboration. Everyone is open to sharing ideas and joining forces. There are many opportunities around campus and in the D.C. area to work with experts from diverse fields and translate our statistical research into practice— leveraging our expertise in methodology, theory, and computation—to open the doors for impactful scientific discoveries.”

“We have outstanding faculty who are national leaders in their areas of expertise. With proper support and expected growth, knowing the facts about other peers, we hope for another leap in the future,’ says Sun.

Ground-breaking research and one-of-a-kind programs helped propel the Volgenau School of Engineering in the top 100 rankings of U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools this year. The school ranked No. 93 nationally, a gain of nine slots from last year, and was No. 55 among public institutions.

“Reaching the top 100 is a break-through moment for the school,” says Dean Ken Ball. “We have had our eye on this milestone for several years, and I’m thrilled to see it become a reality. The ranking is a testament to the great work of our faculty researchers and scholars and also our graduate students. It also reflects a strong return on our investments in our research infrastructure.”

Five of the school’s graduate programs are also ranked within the top 100 of their discipline, as recognized in the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings of graduate programs. One program, Industrial Engineering, is in the top 50 among all universities and the top 25 of all public universities.

The Volgenau School offers 24 graduate degrees, including a newly launched MS in Cyber Security Engineering. Studies range from traditional engineering disciplines to more recent additions in Data Analytics Engineering and Cyber Security Engineering.

Program-specific rankings include:

Industrial engineering: No. 37 nationally (No. 39 last year); No. 24 among public institutions.

Bioengineering: No. 89 nationally (No. 93 last year); No. 53 among public institutions.

Civil engineering: No. 95 nationally (No. 93 last year); No. 68 among public institutions.

Computer engineering: No. 76 nationally (No. 69 last year); No. 46 among public institutions.

Electrical engineering: No. 85 overall (No. 87 last year); No. 52 among public institutions.

George Mason University has 12 graduate programs ranked amongst the top 50 in new rankings released by U.S. News and World Report on March 12.

Leading the way were the security studies program in the Schar School of Policy and Government, which was ranked No. 2, and the part-time JD program at Mason’s Antonin Scalia Law School, ranked No. 4.

Mason’s security studies program is ranked behind Arizona State University and ahead of such prestigious institutions as Columbia University and the Naval Postgraduate School.

“We continue to do what we do well, which is deliver a classroom experience grounded in both theory and practice in the field,” Schar School dean Mark J. Rozell said. “Our program is made up of full-time faculty who are both scholars and practitioners. Students see that investment by the school in their success.”

In addition to its part-time program, the law school’s intellectual property study area was ranked No. 32, and the overall law school was ranked No. 45, retaining its place as a top 50 program.

“I’m delighted that U.S. News again recognized Scalia Law in the top five for part-time juris doctor programs,” said Scalia Law School dean Henry N. Butler. “Part-time students are a proud tradition at the law school. Their experiences enrich the classroom, student organizations and the entire law school community.”

Several programs were ranked among the top 50. The criminology, law and society program in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is ranked 11th. The special education program in the College of Education and Human Development was ranked No. 16, and the part-time MBA program in the School of Business jumped 15 spots to No. 32.

“I’m particularly happy to see the growing recognition of one of our most practical and applied programs,” said School of Business dean Maury Peiperl. “The part-time MBA brings together program participants who know from experience how to get the job done, with faculty and guest speakers whose research and professional expertise helps them to raise their game. It’s an unbeatable combination that exemplifies Mason’s deep connection with business practice.”

The public policy analysis program also came in at No. 32, and the public affairs program ranked No. 47.

The health care management program in the College of Health and Human Services ranked at No. 33, and the industrial engineering program was ranked No. 36. Also in the College of Health and Human Services, the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) program improved by seven spots to rise to No. 37, and the master of science in nursing (MSN) was ranked No. 49, up from last year’s ranking of No. 55.

Mason’s graduate programs offer outstanding networking opportunities with more than 112,000 Mason alumni who live and work in the Washington, D.C., area, and classes offer convenient scheduling and online options.
